Choosing the Right Motorhome to Hire or to Buy
Are you thinking of buying or hiring your first motorhome? How will you decide from the many makes and layouts made which one is for you – well, why do you want a motorhome and what are the pros and cons? I’ve given just a few considerations but there will be more depending on your personal circumstances and preferences.
What is your family situation, just the two of you or a family of 4 or 5? Are you grandparents where it will usually be just the two of you, but may want to take the grandchildren or a friend occasionally? This will affect the number of sleeping berths you want and also the number of passenger seatbelts you would need.
Is it for summer holidays or short breaks only or will you want to take it skiing, in which case you will need to look at how well the vehicle is prepared for the winter?
Do you want a rear lounge? Historically a rear lounge is a British design based on our climate and the fact that we may spend more time inside due to inclement weather or chillier evenings. In European designs there may be a fixed bed instead – with the warmer climate the tendency is that you may only use the motorhome to sleep in.
Would you like a fixed bed or an over cab bed? A fixed bed or an overcab bed can mean no more making up a bed each evening. A fixed bed usually means a large outer door for storage or ‘garage’ to keep all your bikes, chairs, etc. However, to many people it is wasted space if you spend more time in your motorhome. An over cab bed can be great, children love them and they are safe enough up there with the safety net to clip up. However, for some people it can be a little claustrophobic as there is limited head room and it also means that you need to be aware of the height of car park barriers and bridges to avoid damage.
How big a vehicle are you happy driving? You can drive up to a 3.5 tonne motorhome on a normal driving licence for most people, but how long a vehicle do you want to have to park anywhere? Our motorhome is 7.5 metres and 3.5 tonne, so can be driven on a normal licence but can be a bit of a challenge when you wish to park it in town.
Take your time, view as many motorhomes as you can to decide which aspects of design you prefer and then make your choice. Compromise is always necessary on some things, you often can find everything you would like in one vehicle but doing your homework now, before you buy will make like a lot easier and more enjoyable later!
