Motorhome tips for traveling dog care
There are many benefits to a holiday together with your pet and as many Motorhomes are now ‘pet friendly’ this is a simple yet effective way of having a holiday with peace of mind, as well as man’s best friend. Holidays in a Motorhome can be ideal for any four legged friend, as long as there is enough space for yourselves as well as your pet; and the possibilities are limitless when you have no restrictions over dogs in your place of residence. However with long journeys come requirements for the welfare of your pet considering a holiday with your dog, either in the UK or abroad. Here are some simple tips for ensuring your holiday is memorable and positive for all involved:
- If you have a new puppy, or have never before taken your dog out in your motorhome, it is always a good idea to desensitise them to any anxiety they may have. Dogs can be travel sick and this can be set off by stress if they are unused to travelling long distance or suffer from past experiences in vehicles. In order to allow them to acclimatize, start small with short trips in the vehicle, and reward them at the end of each stop with a walk or a treat.
- If your pet does not travel well and gets highly anxious on car journeys, it is also possible to speak to your vet about mild sedatives suitable for dogs. This will help to alleviate their stress during travel.
- The same rules apply in motorhomes as do in cars, and during the hot parts of the day and dogs should never be left unattended in cars or motorhomes. Whilst driving, fresh air should be circulating, either through the air conditioning or through an open window.
- Toilet breaks will be necessary, and your dog will still need walking at least once a day as well as feeding, this can be integrated into your trips by stopping at parks, or dog-friendly sites- of which there are many in the UK.
- There are accessories for motorhomes to make them more ‘dog friendly’ such as ramps for easier access for the small or elderly of your pets, travel beds and specially designed dog bowls.
- It can often work out to be a less expensive holiday when you take your dog with you, when considering the costs of kennels, as well as less emotional.
